MRS. JOHNSTON'S KINDERGARTEN SENSATION

Everyday in our classroom their are exciting things occuring around the clock! These are some of the 'Kodak' moments caught on film.

COMPUTER CENTER

Computers have become an intricate part of our learning process. We use the computers in our classroom to improve our math and reading skills as well as to intoroduce topics on the internet. The children enjoy playing many academically based games as well. We are lucky to have four internet ready computers in our room that our hooked to our TV as well.

JOURNAL CENTER

The children have improved greatly through out the year on their writing abilities. Through their daily journal the studnets are able to explore their writing and work at their own pace. We encourage them to spell things independantly as well as use tools such as dictionaries, and our word walls!

LEARNING CENTER

At the Learning Center the children work on recognizing their letters as well as on reading. Each day the students participate in a guided reading group were they read text that are repetitive. We read them together, take turns, and independantly. The children enjoy reading very much!

MATH CENTER

At the math center the children work on a variety of skills. We use a variety of teaching techniques and activities to make this center fun. The children enjoy doing many of the hands-on math projects and are able to then transfer that knowledge to their papers!

MATH CENTER

The children also work on their writing skills in the math center. Fine motor skills are still developoing at the Kindergarten level. We give the children ample oppurtunity to write, cut and color as well as manipulate small objects. Writing down what they learned during their acitivities also helps them to remember what they have learned!

SCIENCE CENTER

In our Science center the children enjoy doing a wide variety of hands-on acities. The children enjoy such things as classifying, working with colors, grouping things by their letter sounds, looking at worms, etc. The children enjoy playing in the sand while digging for dinosaurs and doing puzzles as well at this center.

WRITING CENTER

In the writing center studnets work to improve their developing writing skills. They use a variety of tools such as tracing cards, chalkboards, white boards, and magnets to write words, phrases and sentences. They are encouraged to spell words on their own, using dictionaries and the word wall.

LIBRARY CENTER

In our library center the children are able to make books to read with their book buddies and at home. These short repetive text are perfect for emergent readers. They are wonderful because they are student made and give the students ownership over their reading.
